Compare concrete estimates by the work described, the assumptions behind the price, and the responsibilities assigned to each party. The total matters, but it becomes meaningful only when you know what each proposal includes.
Whether you are planning a driveway, patio, walkway, or pole barn floor in Michigan, give each bidder the same project brief. Then ask them to explain differences in their proposed approach before deciding.
Give each contractor the same starting information
Share the property location, photos, approximate dimensions, intended use, and desired layout. Mark optional features separately from essential work. Include known access constraints and timing needs.
If one provider has inspected the site and another has only seen photographs, ask what remains provisional in the second proposal. A preliminary number and a written site-based scope should not be treated as equally complete without clarification.
Use the relevant service planning page to organize the initial information. For driveway budgeting, the cost factors guide explains why area alone does not define the project.
Compare scope line by line
Create a comparison sheet with one column for each proposal. Leave an item marked “not specified” when the document does not address it; do not assume an omission means the work is included.
Scope item
Question to resolve
Area and layout
Are dimensions, limits, and adjoining sections identified?
Removal
What existing material is removed, hauled, and disposed of?
Preparation
What work and assumptions are included below the slab?
Specifications
Who determines the concrete, reinforcement, and slab requirements?
Finish and joints
What surface treatment and joint planning are included?
Related work
Who handles drainage, utilities, and other trade coordination?
Completion
What cleanup, restoration, and care instructions are included?
Ask the provider to revise unclear wording in the written proposal. A conversation can explain an omission, but the agreement should preserve the answer you are relying on.
Understand allowances and exclusions
Ask how the proposal handles unknown conditions, additional excavation, unsuitable material, access changes, and requested design changes. Have the contractor identify the trigger for an added charge and the method used to price it.
Clarify who must approve a change before the work proceeds and how that approval is recorded. Keep optional items distinct so you can see their effect without losing track of the agreed core scope.
For exclusions, ask which other provider is expected to perform the work and when it must be completed. An excluded item can still be a necessary project dependency.
Verify credentials and references
Michigan's Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs advises consumers to verify contractor credentials, check references, and use caution with payment arrangements in its contractor hiring guidance.
Ask what licensing and approvals apply to your particular scope and verify relevant credentials through the responsible authority. Ask for current insurance information and references for comparable work. This article does not establish that Great Lakes Bay Concrete holds any particular license, policy, or certification.
When reviewing project photos, confirm who completed the work and what the contractor's role was. A useful reference should help you understand relevant experience rather than simply provide an attractive image.
Discuss timing, payment, and aftercare
Ask how scheduling is confirmed, what happens if weather affects the plan, and who communicates changes. Identify when the area will be unavailable and how permitted use will be communicated after placement.
Review the proposed payment schedule, written terms, and any stated warranty or exclusions before agreeing. Do not assume a deposit amount, free estimate offer, warranty, or completion guarantee from another contractor applies to this proposal.
Request written care instructions, including product details and who answers questions after the work. For driveways, agree on the process for confirming when each vehicle type may return.
Common estimate comparison questions
Should I choose the lowest total?
First resolve the differences in scope and assumptions. Then evaluate the complete proposal against your needs, verified qualifications, written terms, and budget.
Is a more detailed estimate always the best choice?
Detail helps you review a proposal, but it still needs to be accurate, appropriate to the project, and supported by a capable provider. Ask about unclear or unnecessary items.
Can this website deliver a quote now?
The estimate page is currently a planning demonstration. It does not send information, store a request, produce a binding quote, or book work.
